Every week, Wrecked will be highlighting 2-3 bands playing the upcoming Bay Area Metal Festival. We figured we’d start with the headliner, a legendary thrash band native to the SF Bay Area known as FORBIDDEN.

For Fans of: Testament, Exodus, Slayer, Metallica, Iron Maiden, etc.

The 2011 Bay Area Metal Festival is fast approaching, and looks to be one of the most historical events the Bay Area metal scene has ever seen. The mighty Bay Area based thrash metal band, Forbidden, has stepped up to headline the festival and bring spotlight to this incredible event.

Fans of 80’s and 90’s thrash will feel right at home with the crushing Forbidden. You’ll get your moshpit-worthy riffing, but these guys aren’t afraid to bring a bit of melody into the mix. Vocalist Russ Anderson will lash out at you with screams similar to those of Tom Araya of Slayer and then serenade you with haunting melodies before kicking your ass all over again. The fact that Forbidden agreed to put their name on a festival like BAMF shows great things about the character of the band. Let this be known to all of the younger bands out there: never forget where you came from! I can’t wait to see these guys close out the night of the festival this July.

Here’s the title track off of their latest album, Omega Wave:

Forbidden was originally formed in 1985 as Forbidden Evil by vocalist Russ Anderson, guitarists Robb Flynn and Craig Locicero, bassist Matt Camacho, and drummer Paul Bostaph, known as the second wave of Bay Area Thrash Metal. The band signed with Combat Records. They released their 1988 debut Forbidden Evil and toured with fellow thrashers Exodus, Death Angel, and Testament. Forbidden then recorded a live EP at the 1989 Dynamo Festival in Eindhoven, entitled Raw Evil: Live at the Dynamo. Forbidden then put out the albums Twisted Into Form in 1990, Distortion in 1995, and Green in 1997. Forbidden reformed in 2008 after signing to Nuclear Blast Records and released their latest album Omega Wave in 2010.
