BAMF Spotlight: Lyceum
Tuesday, May 17, 2011 1 Comment
Every week, Wrecked will be highlighting 2-3 bands playing the upcoming Bay Area Metal Festival. This week we have Lyceum, a melodic extreme metal band from my hometown in Concord, CA.
Lyceum, though relatively new to the local scene, is as metal as it gets: melodies that conjure images of fighting wizards, nonstop riffage, leather jackets, long, unkempt hair, and blastbeats that could make heads explode. Vocalist Blake Peterson literally sounds like Satan. I instantly thought of Amon Amarth when I first heard this band, but upon listening more intently, I discovered there was much more than just gurgled growls and rapid-fire double bass; there is something very old school about this band’s focus that is refreshing in a “stick-to-your-roots” kind of way. I’m stoked Concord still has bands like Lyceum holding down the darker metal scene and I can’t wait to see them play live at BAMF and give them some local love.
Some tunes and footage of the band tearing it up live await you after the jump…
Here’s a track off of their 2010 Demo, entitled “Serpent of God”:
Offical Bio: Lyceum was founded in early 2010 by the former members of three Bay Area metal bands and is currently writing towards its first album. The songs written since the available 2010 demo (recorded by Vincent Wojno, producer of Testament, Machine Head, High on Fire, Kreator, and Death Angel) have developed around the ethics of heroism, conflict, corruption, and empire, following a narrative written by the band.
The band does not see itself in dialogue so much with the current metal community as with music, cinema, and art throughout history, combining a wide range of emotions and sounds using the devices of metal.
The name Lyceum refers to the academy of Aristotle, the teacher of Alexander the Great, dedicated to Apollo Lyceus, pivotal in the history of western aesthetics, education, and philosophy. Lyceum’s members have combined show experience playing with Deicide, All Shall Perish, Embryonic Devourment, Testament, Death Angel, Vital Remains, Dragonlord, 3 Inches of Blood, Goatwhore, God Forbid, Mnemic, and Pungent Stench.
