Netflix Pick: Happythankyoumoreplease

If there’s one thing I love about Netflix Instant Watch, it’s the abundance of independent films from promising first time writer/directors. This week’s pick is a notable indie dramedy that fits comfortably in that category, seeing as it is the debut feature from Josh Radnor. If that name sounds familiar, then you may be a fan of the beloved sitcom “How I Met Your Mother,” in which Radnor plays serially romantic protagonist, Ted Mosby [if you’re not a fan yet, “HIMYM” is also available on Netflix (hint, hint)]. How does he fare as a writer/director? Find out after the break!

Capcom Announces Mega Man & Pac Man For Street Fighter X Tekken

mega man street fighter x tekken

Capcom has just announced that Mega Man and Pac Man have officially joined the roster for the upcoming Street Fighter X Tekken mashup — but ONLY for Playstation 3. This is in addition to the previously announced Cole McGrath of inFamous fame (see what I did there?) and Kuro Turo. Some might not recognize the man in the above picture right away, but that’s actually the depiction of Mega Man from the box art of the very first NES game. Yeah, WTF. Full trailer after the break:

I’ve Always Wanted to Be Part of the Mafia.

Food trucks are a thing of beauty. They really are. They’re even more beautiful when they’re all gathered in one place for your gluttonous enjoyment. Can something so glorious truly exist? Yes, and it’s happening right in your own back yard.

Let me introduce you to a collective that calls themselves the Food Truck Mafia, a group of local food vendors that travel all around the bay all day, just to come together almost every night for one of the Bay Area’s best kept secrets. Though the trucks vary every week, the chance of eating something delicious is constant, so we headed to Union City last Thursday night to revel in these mobile menus.

Netflix Pick: The Perfect Host

This week’s Netflix Pick is a movie I’ve been dancing around checking out for a while now. I remember hearing tell of a strange, twisty thriller starring David Hyde Pierce making the film festival rounds a couple of years ago, which piqued my interest for a variety of reasons. I noticed a few months back that it had been added to the illustrious Netflix instant watch catalog, and was flirting with idea of checking it out, despite the mixed reviews I’d seen. For the purposes of my little weekly feature, I decided to finally take the jump. Is “The Perfect Host” worth your hour and a half? Find out after the break!

MUST WATCH: Black Dynamite Animated Series Pilot Kicks Some Honkey Ass!

“Black Dynamite” was easily one of the most surprisingly amazing comedies of these last few years. Though it was hardly a commercial success right off the bat, it’s been growing more and more popular as of late just by word of mouth alone. It’s one of those movies that’s so damn hilarious and kicks so much ass, it’s almost crime to not have seen it by now. For those of you that still haven’t, do yourself a favor and go pick it up. You won’t regret it.

But I’m not here to talk about the movie. “Black Dynamite – The Animated Series” is reportedly expected to air early this year. Although the trailer has been floating around the web since last fall, somehow I hadn’t heard about it until now. The full pilot episode has been difficult to find in full, but the it’s currently available on JoBlo.com. We’ve got the details here.

Netflix Pick: The Vicious Kind

FYI: This is not the poster Netflix uses. It is infinitely better than the image they chose, as are all other posters I found for this film.

Just in case you were worried that I would forget about my promise to keep this up as a weekly feature, I’m here to PROVE YOU WRONG. There’s an absolute wealth of great content available on Netflix instant streaming, a great deal of which most people have probably never heard of. There’s nothing I love doing quite as much as showing people fantastic films they didn’t even know existed, and that goes double for myself. Therefore, this feature will essentially be a chronicling of my journey through the wilds of Netflix’s library, watching a new film every week and letting you know whether or not it’s worth your time. Luckily, “The Vicious Kind” is absolutely worth your time. Find out why after the break!

NHL Blurb: Shootout Goals of Beauty

The Detroit Red Wings have developed and maintained a stacked roster of veteran players with an unbelievable amount of skill over the past several seasons. Pavel Datsyuk of course, is the most note-worthy with his brilliance and even wizardy with a 3″ vulcanized rubber disc, but other Red Wings have stepped to the plate in the last three to four seasons. Henrik Zetterberg showcased the Red Wings’ depth to the hockey world yet again, on Thursday night (Jan 12), with a beauty of a game-winning shootout goal against net-minder Mike Smith of the Phoenix Coyotes.

Stabbing at a House Party…Oddly Entertaining.

SHE"S FREAKED THE FUCK OUT!!!!!

Watch the video after the break, it’s a little dark and grainy, don’t worry, not too graphic. You can JUST BARELY make the out the stabbing, but what happens just before, and pretty much everything after is pretty hilarious.

Preview and Predictions: 49ers vs. Saints

The time has come. The NFL playoffs are in full swing, and the 49ers are finally back in the mix. After a pathetic eight years without a playoff appearance, the red and gold have claimed the number 2 seed with a 13-3 record. That’s quite an improvement from last season’s record, which was a sad 6-10. The team’s turn-around can be attributed to one thing: a new coaching staff. Namely, head coach Jim Harbaugh. He’s definitely the right man for the job. The Niners needed an offensively-minded coach, and Harbaugh, being a former NFL quarterback and former Stanford head coach, was a no-brainer. The team also brought over a few other coaches from Stanford, and it has translated into many, many wins. The talent was there all along, it just wasn’t being utilized correctly. They now have the number one ranked defense in the NFL, and an offense that plays well enough to win every game. And that’s why they’re going to beat the Saints.

Netflix Pick: Tucker and Dale vs. Evil

Given the rampant availability of devices that are able to stream the vast library of titles offered by Netflix instant streaming,   I thought that providing recommendations of said titles on a somewhat-regular basis might be a useful feature on the site. After all, there are SO many great gems on the service that a lot of people might easily overlook, especially given the relative shittiness of many of the title browsing interfaces on certain platforms (mine being PS3). To get this feature started, I bring to your attention the wonderfully slapstick horror-comedy “Tucker and Dale Vs. Evil.”

4 Lessons I’ve Learned About Hospitals

When it comes to health, I’m not the most fortunate person on the planet. In this year alone I have been to the hospital seven times–four of those times being within the past three weeks. It’s safe to say that I’m a medical mystery, and I’ll probably end up on one of those “Mystery Diagnosis” shows one day. The 2011 holiday season was a bad one for me. I caught a cold, then got the flu a week later, then caught strep throat 2 weeks after that. This is where things took a turn for the shitty. The strep bacteria caused an infection in my tonsils, which the doctors had to slice open to drain the puss out. Not once, not twice, but three times. When the infection came back a fourth time the day after Christmas, the doctors gave the order to just remove my tonsils altogether. So into surgery I went.

[UPDATED] Original Killswitch Engage Vocalist Returns

Coolest shirt ever. Both Howard and his shirts will be missed.

There have been some rumblings on the internet these last few days about Killswitch Engage regarding Howard Jones’ future in the band. As many of you know, Jones had to temporarily leave the band RIGHT before they embarked on a North American tour, and the band called up fellow Massachusetts-native Phil Labonte (All That Remains) to fill in for the tour. Well, the news just broke that Howard Jones is officially leaving the band. Here’s his official statement, via the band’s official Facebook page:
